Shi (finger) atsu (pressure), a Japanese form of massage, evolved from traditional Chinese medicine techniques. Today it continues to incorporate new discoveries with the ancient knowledge of the past. Shiatsu is based on the principle of Ki, vital life force, which moves like water, unobstructed, through us in connected pathways called meridians. Nourishing and energizing every part of our body, Ki keeps us healthy and well. When obstructed, due to toxins, stress, poor diet etc. like a river Ki becomes stagnant and imbalanced. Depending on the extent of blockage, fatigue, pain, and disease can occur. By treating the specific areas along meridians called Tsubos or Acu-points, Ki flow is affected. Once balance is restored,
the body’s own natural healing powers are stimulated and vitality is regained. It is the goal of Shiatsu to return the body to this harmonious state of being.
On its own Shiatsu can treat a wide variety of current conditions, and is an important aspect of Preventative Health Care. Due to its connection with traditional Chinese medicine, Shiatsu is an excellent adjunct to acupuncture and Chinese herb prescribing. It serves as a complementary therapy for Western methods of manipulation, (chiropractic, physiotherapy and massage etc.), providing an entirely different stimulus to the body. |
